The Bellagio opened on 15 October 1998, replacing the Dunes on the site of a former man-made lake. Developer Steve Wynn invested $1.6 billion — the most expensive hotel-casino ever built — with one directive: equal the grandeur of Europe's great hotel palaces, transplanted to the Nevada desert.
The property is anchored by an 8.5-acre artificial lake home to the world-famous Fountains of Bellagio — 1,200 water jets choreographed to classical compositions and opera. Shows run every 30 minutes in the afternoon and every 15 minutes from dusk until midnight.
Interior centrepiece: the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, a 13,500 sq ft glass atrium maintained by 140 horticulturalists with five rotating seasonal installations. The adjacent Gallery of Fine Art brought the first rotating fine-art exhibitions to Las Vegas, hosting works from the Hermitage, MoMA, and the Smithsonian.
Architecture Note
The design references the Italian lakeside village of Bellagio on Lake Como. Its principal tower stretches 508 ft (155 m) across 36 floors, clad in cream material evoking northern Italian lakeside facades. Total built area: ~6 million sq ft.
